About Carriacou

The Caribbean island of Carriacou, meaning Isle of Reefs, is part of the tri island state of Grenada and measures just 13 square miles.

Historically famous for its boatbuilding tradition, it is still possible to spot the Carriacou Sloops as they sail around these seas and there is often a boat still being built in the time honoured way at Windward on the East coast. Visitors are always welcomed to see the work in action.

The island is very safe and friendly with little to no crime and a welcoming greeting from locals at every turn.

A stay in Carriacou is to experience the real Caribbean - tourism is very low key - you will not find any large hotels or resorts nor noisy nightclubs or huge shopping malls. And with a population of around just 7,000 the island is quiet, relaxed and friendly - the perfect escape from a modern day life of stress and noise!

Despite its size, the island has much to offer. From beautiful, safe and sandy beaches with some of the best snorkelling and coral reefs in the Caribbean, to peaceful treks through the forest where you can appreciate the abundant nature to be found in the island.

Anse le Roche beach is a half hour walk away and is a hidden gem - well worth the steep walk down.

Paradise Beach is just as its name suggests and is a wonderful spot to relax and watch the sailing yachts come and go to Sandy Island just offshore.

Petit Carenage is one of the beaches where you may be lucky to see sea turtles as they come ashore here to nest. In addition to a lovely sandy beach there are nature trails through the mangroves and several bird hides to watch from.

There are several choices for eating out - but this being the Caribbean we suggest you always double check opening times and where possible always make a reservation!

Our nearest restaurant is  Bogles Round House, which offers fine dining in a magical garden setting just five minutes drive from Prospect House.

A great selection of pizzas is available from Pizza Meh Heart on the east coast - all freshly prepared in their Italian pizza oven.

In the south of the island, The Original Slipway offers a great selection of gourmet dishes right on the beach beside the harbour.

Paradise Beach Club is open every day, offering fabulous lunch or dinner with the best cocktails right on the beach at Paradise.

The Gallery Bistro in Tyrel Bay is open for lunch and dinner - we recommend booking for dinner when you will find a fantastic range of the some of the best Indian food we have tasted anywhere.

Local food is also on offer at many small outlets throughout the island - we are happy to give you suggestions.

Eating Out

Although there is little nightlife as such in Carriacou, there are several festivals throughout the year when the many traditions and culture of the island can be experienced together with some great live music - string bands and steel bands. We are very happy to help advise you if there is anything special happening when you are here.

Nightlife

For the more adventurous there are some wonderful hikes on offer - High North (the highest point of the island) is one of the best rewarding the walker with some amazing views across the whole of the island and is just on our doorstep.

If rest and recovery is what you are looking for, then there are also plenty of more gentle walks where there is much to discover in terms of beautiful scenery and local wildlife - birds abound, iguanas, tortoises and lizards are a delight to spot and the fish around the reefs are amazing. If you are really lucky, you may even get the chance to swim with turtles - ask us for further information….

Many visitors come to Carriacou just for the snorkelling and diving which is second to none - from a simple trip straight off the beach or an organised dive session with one of the local companies.

Outdoor Life

Island tours are available from local drivers who are full of knowledge of the history of Carriacou.

We can also help you with day trips to other outlying islands all of which are easily accessible by a local boat.
