8 great things to do in Carriacou
The pure white sands and turquoise seas are enough to tempt most visitors to the shores of Carriacou - the as yet mostly undiscovered jewel of the Caribbean.
However, if you are looking for a little extra there are plenty of other options to include in your trip.
Sandy Island - this tiny archetypal desert island lies just five minutes off Carriacou by water taxi. Take a picnic and your snorkel for a real treat
Tobago Cays - venture a little further north to this group of tiny islands and experience the magic of swimming with turtles within the Marine National Park. Several tour operators offer this trip and it one not to be forgotten
High North - there are many wonderful walks in Carriacou but our personal favourite is the one to High North - a good 45 minute walk up a track from the government road takes you to the highest point in the island where the amazing 360 degree views are more than reward enough for the trek
Diving - Carriacou meaning ‘Isle of Reefs” affords some of the best diving in the Caribbean and there are a number of dive opportunities. Deefer Diving is located in the capital of Hillsborough and is the premier PADI 5 Star Dive Resort in Carriacou, Grenada. There are trips to 33 beautiful dive sites on apurpose-built diving catamaran together with a range of PADI diving courses from beginner to pro, as well as snorkel equipment rental & sales.
Anse le Roche beach - if you prefer to stay above the water then snorkelling off Anse le Roche beach is highly recommended - the waters are clear and teaming with stunning tropical fish - and the reward for the slightly arduous trek down to this tucked away beach might be that you are the only ones there
Scaramouche - a day onboard this magnificent old 80ft schooner which starred in “Pirates of the Caribbean” takes in three island destinations with several opportunities for snorkelling. The Scaramouche was built in Carriacou by local shipwrights
Island Tour - there are plenty of local tour guides that are very happy to give an island tour, stopping off at the many wonderful photo hotspots and giving insight into the history and nature of Carriacou
Tyrell Bay - this is the primary location on Carriacou for anchoring yachts and also serves as a popular beach. There are many small local cafes offering refreshments along the seafront together with the highly recommended Slipway Restaurant.
